In the ongoing saga of Tasmania's greyhound racing ban, the state's new racing minister, Roger Jaensch, is reportedly working diligently to push the legislation through parliament. This comes as some racing participants show interest in the government's proposed voluntary exit scheme, which offers financial assistance to those looking to leave the industry by the end of the year. The question remains: will this be enough to phase out greyhound racing in Tasmania, and what does this mean for the future of the industry and its participants? Personally, I think the government's approach is a step in the right direction, but there are still many unanswered questions and potential pitfalls. The government's decision to defer debate on the legislation in April was a strategic move, as it allowed them to gather support and address concerns. With the support of three government MLCs and the recent addition of independent Clare Glade-Wright, the bill now has seven of the eight votes it needs to pass. However, the opposition from Labor and the potential votes of the other independents could still derail the process. The parliamentary committee's work to examine the financial, economic, and animal welfare impacts of the phase-out is crucial. While the committee recommended the ban be supported, there are still dissenting voices, and the cost of rehoming greyhounds remains a significant concern. The government's budgeted $4.6 million for the transition, but Labor estimates the cost could be as high as $40 million. This raises a deeper question: how can the government ensure an orderly transition that supports animal welfare and the industry's participants, while also being fiscally responsible? The voluntary exit scheme is a positive step, but it may not be enough to convince all participants to leave the industry. The government needs to address the concerns of those who are hesitant to leave, and provide a clear path forward for those who do choose to exit. The comparison with New Zealand, where a greyhound racing ban came into effect on Saturday, is interesting. Chartered flights brought up to 150 dogs from New Zealand to Australia, where they will continue racing. This raises a question: why can't Tasmania do the same? The government's response that it did not expect any New Zealand dogs to come to Tasmania is a bit disingenuous. If the legislation is passed, it will provide for an orderly transition, but the government needs to be transparent about the costs and the potential impact on the industry. In my opinion, the government has a challenging task ahead. They need to navigate the political landscape, address the concerns of participants, and ensure an orderly transition that supports animal welfare and the industry's future. The success of the greyhound racing ban will depend on their ability to communicate effectively, address the financial concerns, and provide a clear path forward for all stakeholders. The future of greyhound racing in Tasmania hangs in the balance, and the government needs to act swiftly and decisively to ensure a smooth transition.
